Over the last few years, I've helped founders and product designers find their niche & market.

Here's the 4-step playbook I use to help you nail down your niche/focus:

Step 1 - Identify your superpowers.

Your superpowers = The intersection between your skills & interests.

List down your interests List down your skills Conduct a skills assessment through people close to you Create a survey on google forms and ask people

  1. List down your interests
  2. List down your skills (You ask others to help you identify your skills, here's a simple google form, here you can replicate)

Once you find the intersection between your validated skills and interests, you'll find your superpowers.

Step 2 - Collect your ideas

The average person gets ~6,000 ideas per day (on various areas of life) to increase the odds of your success, you'll need to:

  • Note down your ideas as soon as you can
  • Create a short list of ideas that  is relevant to your superpowers

Example: You're a skilled marketer with an interest in gaming → A unique idea for you would be a product/service for marketing games.

Now, you are ready to move on to the next step.

Step 3 - Understand your customer's Avatar

If you've reached this step, you must already have an idea that will provide value to someone (Let's call this someone "Joe").

Now, you need to ask yourself the following questions about Joe:

  • How old is Joe?
  • Where does Joe work?
  • What's a typical day in the life of Joe?
  • What are activities that he is interested in?

Once you have answers to these questions, you can move on to the final step.

Step 4 - Define your offering

If you've reached this step, you've already:

  1. Successfully identified your superpower(s).
  2. Selected a unique idea relevant to your capabilities.
  3. Defined your main target audience/customer avatar.

Now, you have to define how will you deliver value to your target audience. There are multiple ways you can go about this:

  • Consultancy advise.
  • A done-for-you service.
  • A tool to help your customer do it themselves.
  • A training service to let customers do it themselves.

My suggestion would be to start with a consultancy or a done-for-you service.

This enables you to have sufficient interactions with customers to understand them better and decide on going all in/dropping the idea.

Here's a quick recap on how to identify and build your niche:

  1. Identify your superpowers (skills x interests).
  2. Collect your ideas.
  3. Define your customer avatar.
  4. Decide on your offering.
